Texture
Textural elements are one of the simplest ways to introduce depth to your space while also creating points of visual interest.
Soft furnishings are a flexible way to add texture, without long-term commitment; think linen, suede, or velvet cushions, luxurious wool rugs, or a woven throw. Make a bigger statement with a subtle, on-trend limewash or colour wash on your walls.
The materials you choose to use in your home are also important. Tiles, timber, and natural materials add an extra layer of visual contrast, and subtly shift the ambience of your space.
Lighting
Lighting is often overlooked as a source of contrast. Far too often, stunning fabric and furniture choices are let down by a single source of light - often bright overhead lighting.
Incorporating multiple light sources, angles, and intensities can add incredible depth to your space and completely change the feel of a room. Combine feature lights or pendants with subtle under-cabinet lighting, soft wall sconces, natural light, or focused workspace lighting to create a space that’s both functional and beautiful.
Patterns
Patterns instantly create visual interest and add an eye-catching element to your space.
If your design style is more pared-back, don’t worry; patterns don’t have to be big or bold in order to be effective. A tonal wallpaper, monochrome tile, or subtle nature-inspired pattern can work just as well as a bold tartan or bright floral.
Tonality
Even in a minimalist home, your colour palette doesn’t have to be limited to one or two shades - unless you’re deliberately aiming to create a stark, dramatic effect.
For more depth and warmth, choose multiple tones within the same colour scheme. You’ll retain the cohesiveness of a limited colour palette, while creating a space with more dimension.
