Monochromatic

Imagine a space filled with varying tones and textures of a single hue; cohesive and stylish, without being boring or losing visual interest. That's the beauty of a monochromatic palette.

Layering different shades, tints, and textures of one colour instantly makes a room feel sophisticated, and monochromatic spaces tend to feel modern and effortless. However, they come with constraints; if you’re a lover of accent colours or bold, eclectic artwork, a monochromatic space is likely to feel too restrictive or confined.

Colour Drenching

Colour drenching takes the monochromatic approach a step further, saturating every element with the same colour. Colour drenching creates memorable spaces with a clearly defined mood, whether that’s the dramatic allure of deep, saturated tones or the vibrant energy of brighter shades.

Colour drenched rooms are bold and immersive, and definitely not for the faint of heart! If you’re someone who loves colour and isn’t afraid to make a statement, this is a trend worth exploring.

Complementary

You’ve probably heard that opposites attract, and it’s definitely true when it comes to colour. Complementary palettes use a pair of colours that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, such as blue and orange, or red and green. The high contrast creates a vibrant and energetic feel. It’s common to use one colour as a dominant shade and the other as an accent to avoid making the space feel overwhelming.

If you find monochromatic palettes restrictive and want to add more colour to your home—without ‘going over the top’—complementary palettes are a great option.

Analogous

Analogous colour palettes, also referred to as harmonious palettes, contain colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel. This might be a palette that includes shades of green, blue, and teal, or a palette that uses red, rose, and pale pink.

Compared to high-contrast complementary palettes, analogous palettes create a sense of calm and - as the name suggests - harmony. They’re perfect for when you want to bring rich colours into your home, while prioritising a sense of balance and flow.

Split Complementary

Similar to complementary palettes, split complementary palettes include one base colour and the two colours adjacent to its complement on the colour wheel (so instead of pairing blue with orange, you might pair it with yellow-orange and orange-red).

The extra colour introduces another layer of visual interest, and gives you more opportunities to experiment with decor and furnishings. If you like the contrast of a complementary palette but want a more colourful, playful feel, split complementary palettes are worth exploring.

Triadic

A triadic palette involves three colours that are evenly spaced on the colour wheel. A primary triadic colour palette would include red, yellow, and blue, while a more restrained triadic palette could include orange, green, and purple. Triadic palettes create a vibrant and playful look that is full of energy, but without careful curation, they can quickly become chaotic! To keep your triadic palette refined and restrained, select one main colour and bring in the others as accents.
