We often talk about how our interior designers create “spaces inspired by your story” - but what does that mean? A space inspired by your story means a home that’s unique to you, and is an expression of your personality and style. It’s your sanctuary, a place you love to live in and enjoy sharing with friends and family.
Sometimes clients come to us with a very specific brief - “I love midcentury design, natural textiles, and the colour yellow” - and sometimes design is a journey of discovery, where an interior scheme is inspired by a favourite colour, memory, or possession.
As interior designers, we listen to your ideas and inspirations, and understand what you’d like to achieve. Then we use our expertise to guide you through the process of bringing that inspiration to life within a space.
In this article, we explore five common interior design inspirations, and how we work with our clients to transform these into beautiful spaces.
Inspired by colour
Butter yellow, deep-sea blue, rich copper… different colours create different moods, and colour is often one of the first things we talk about in an initial design consultation.
If you have a favourite colour or shade, there are a range of ways we can incorporate this into your design - and it doesn’t have to be the defining feature of your home! We might include subtle-yet-striking accent colours throughout the interior, a harmonious palette featuring your favourite shade, or a maximalist aesthetic where your colour of choice takes centre stage.
Inspired by feeling
How do you want your home to feel when you wake up in the morning, or walk through the door after work? The same house can feel cozy, dramatic, bright, luxurious, or peaceful, depending on the interior design. Thinking about the ambience you’d like to create is a great way to begin your design journey, and can help to guide your colour choices, materials, fabrics and finishes.
It’s also helpful to think about anything you’d like to avoid. One client we worked with had previously lived in a home with a grey-toned interior, which they found felt a little cold and impersonal. We worked with them to create a home that felt warm and inviting.
Inspired by the way you use your home
As well as aesthetics, interior design has plenty of practical considerations: who will be living in the home? What does your daily routine look like? How do you plan to use your space?
Great design also dives into the kind of experience you want to create for your family and guests. Are you designing a relaxed sanctuary, perfect for long, lazy lunches? A vibrant, high-energy space where dinner parties continue into the early hours? A regular hangout spot for your children's sports teams, with plenty of couch space (and durable fabrics)?
Exploring the way you like to live, and designing your interior to suit, is a huge part of making your space your own.
Inspired by a special piece
If you have a favourite painting, heirloom ornament, or striking piece of furniture, let your interior designer know!
We enjoy finding ways to incorporate your favourite pieces into your interior scheme, and can guide you through the process of creating a space that’s perfect to showcase your most-loved items.
Inspired by your values
If you’re passionate about using locally made, natural, or sustainable materials, we can make sure this is taken into account during the product selection process.
If you’re feeling inspired by the possibilities, book a design consultation and discover how we can create a space inspired by your story. You’ll be surprised by how easy and enjoyable it is to bring your style and personality into your home.
