How do you create a refined interior on a modest budget, in a compact space? For Nextdore designer Donna Weir, the answer lay in daring to depart from a stock-standard monochrome palette, and using thoughtfully chosen finishes that blend luxury and affordability. The end result is five stunning new townhouses, each ready for the new owners to add their own style.

Newly built houses - especially those with a smaller footprint - run the risk of feeling stark and sterile. Instead, the St Albans homes are refined and restful spaces; warm colour palettes and subtle textures create a welcoming environment, while still leaving room for the new owners to express their personal style.

The homes embody a ‘luxury for less’ philosophy, showing that beautifully resolved spaces can be achieved without compromising on budget. Donna selected a balanced mixture of premium and cost-effective finishes, creating spaces that feel luxurious and curated, but still attainable.

The kitchen radiates a sense of calm and familiarity. Deep sage cabinetry and warm wood tones ground the space, while the rippled texture of Marlow Cloud Matt tiles evoke handmade ceramics, adding a touch of craftsmanship. Brass detailing adds a layer of understated luxury, and ensures the timeless colour palette feels modern and fresh.

The bathrooms are a masterclass in maximising space and light. Round, backlit mirrors extend the visual space, and soft colour palettes set a tranquil mood.

The brass detailing found in the kitchen continues through the bathrooms and powder rooms, continuing the design narrative and ensuring the home feels cohesive and complete.

Tile selections are a key element in the bathroom design. Lightly textured floor and wall tiles from Baldocer add depth to each space without overwhelming the compact layouts.

The chosen feature tile, Equipe Massimo Almond, offers subtle colour variations and a satin finish, gently elevating the design from subtle to sophisticated.

Donna’s commitment to creating peaceful, contemplative spaces is continued in the bedrooms, where warm, neutral colour palettes are the perfect backdrop for rest and relaxation.

Robert Malcolm Ashurst carpet combines performance and comfort, while remaining a budget-friendly option.
